Calling all Arabic, Italian, Russian, and Spanish L2 Instructors!

Registration is now open for Teaching with Text-Based Tasks: A Language Pedagogy Training for Second Language Instructors, offered by the Center for Integrated Language Communities (CILC, one of sixteen National Language Resource Centers).

Participants will learn how to develop level-appropriate, text-based tasks and integrate them into an existing syllabus, avoiding the need to redesign an entire course plan. The training will also introduce participants to various strategies for implementing the tasks with their learners. Training starts October 8th. Only five spots per language!

We’re pleased to announce that the LaPEL (Language Placement for Equitable Learning) team has been invited to present our study on using vocabulary knowledge as a proxy for proficiency level at the Interagency Language Roundtable (ILR), hosted by the Foreign Service Institute, both online and in Arlington, Virginia.

The three-year LaPEL project, funded by a U.S. Department of Education IFLE (International and Foreign Language Education) grant, is a pioneering initiative to improve instruction in modern heritage languages by investigating sustainable, proficiency-based placement methods for college-level Spanish heritage language learners, a historically underserved population.

We’re pleased to announce that the IPAP (Investigating Pedagogies for Advanced Proficiency) team has been accepted to present our Complexity study at the Heritage Languages Around the World 2 (HLAW2) conference taking place from May 29th to 31st, 2024 at UMass, Amherst.

The complexity component of the IPAP project has the goal of understanding the patterns of syntactic complexity, accuracy, and lexical use in the writing of heritage language learners (HLLs) at two major levels of functional proficiency: Intermediate and Advanced (following the American Council for the Teaching of Foreign Languages, ACTFL, 2012 Guidelines).

Alberta Gatti, Daniela Castillo, and Syelle Graves will be presenting. Registration to attend all presentations is open at HLAW’s registration website.

Peacebuilding here is focused at the macrolevel of government actors and institutions, including educational organizations; however, work within language and culture education suggests that individuals, including those in conflict-ridden parts of the world, often cite inner and interpersonal dimensions of peace as central. What roles might intercultural learning play in fostering peace across and between these disparate levels? What might an intercultural education for peacebuilding that is cognizant of disparity and pain look like? What kinds of connections between intercultural peace and other dimensions including inner peace and ecological peace can our language curricula and programs help students to explore? How can language educators promote respect for all, build a sense of belonging to a common humanity, and help learners become responsible and active global citizens?

The Center for International Foreign Language Teacher Education (CIFLTE) at Teachers College is currently accepting applications for its TCSOL Certificate Program for the 2023-2024 Academic Year.

This program features cutting-edge training in Chinese language pedagogy and Task-Based Language Teaching from a faculty of experts in Chinese Educational Linguistics and Second Language Acquisition. Classes integrate theoretical instruction with hands-on teaching experience, and will be held in person at Teachers College, Columbia University in New York City for the upcoming year.

The Center for East Asian Studies (CEAS); the Center for Educational Resources in Culture, Language, and Literacy (CERCLL); the Center for Latin American Studies (CLAS); and the Center for Middle Eastern Studies (CMES) at the University of Arizona
are glad to invite you to our 7th annual conference for Community College educators on January 20-22, 2023. This year’s theme is “Globalizing the Community College Curriculum: Add Food and Stir.”

Community Colleges are doing important work, educating a large percentage of post-secondary
students to become part of a globalized world. As such, it is vital to internationalize the curricula of community college classes; the topic of food, as a universal need and cultural touchstone, provides an accessible gateway to the world. The conference offers an opportunity to learn from and share with colleagues across community college departments and campuses how you use the topics of food and cuisine to internationalize your curriculum. We understand that January 22 is Lunar New Year, and the conference will include a dinner to celebrate it.

This conference is free and will be meeting in-person. Limited funding will be available for out-of-town presenters’ housing. Three meals will be included for all participants.
