The aim of the Text-based Pedagogy Training project is to develop and pilot trainings for instructors to learn how to create text-based activities and integrate the activities into their existing courses.
Text-based instruction uses texts sourced directly from target-language discourse communities (intended for language users, not learners), and teaches learners how to read those texts critically; recognize features in the texts; and create their own texts. This pedagogy has been shown in research to be highly effective at advancing the linguistic development of both L2 and heritage language learners (Byrnes, Maxim, & Norris, 2010; Rossomondo & Lord, 2023). Yet, text-based tasks are rarely included in commercially available textbooks.
During the Teaching Written Communication with Text-Based Tasks trainings, participants learn how to develop their own level-appropriate, text-based tasks and integrate them into their existing syllabus, avoiding the need to redesign an entire course plan. The training also introduces various strategies for implementing the tasks in their teaching, facilitating language development in a challenging and engaging way, using an approach that has been demonstrated to be efficacious.
The participating instructors have also shared the tasks they developed in the trainings with the public, as no-cost instructor resources which can be found in the Repository button on the left.
